WIMPY
AQHA - Hall of Fame
When Wimpy won the 1941, Fort Worth Exposition and Fat Stock Show, he was awarded permanent number one, in the then fledgling American Quarter Horse Association registry.
It was only fitting, that Wimpy, judged the best of the best, born and raised on the famous King Ranch, in Kingsville, Texas, would get this great honor. He was royally bred, and typified the Foundation Bred American Quarter Horse.
The King Ranch, in Texas, had been a hotbed of the type of horses that came to be known as The American Quarter Horse for over fifty years, before the AQHA was even formed. The King Ranch breeding program had evolved with much thought and direction, and had become one of the horse industries' leaders, using linebreeding techniques far ahead of its time.
Men like Bob Kleberg, and his sons, Richard and Robert, who combined their love of the quarter type horse, with men like George Clegg, Ott Adams and Sam Lazarus had a vision, and it came to fruition.
Like so many of the best early Quarter Horses, Wimpy descended three times from the lightning fast Peter McCue, through his famous son, Hickory Bill, and then twice from Old Sorrel and the Roan Q Mare.
It was a great program and the results were proven at the Fort Worth Show!! Linebreeding had been successfully managed and proven to produce the best of the best.
When the King ranch had a stallion, they rode him before they bred him, and this was the case with Wimpys sire, Old Sorrel. When he had proven to be satisfactory, he was turned out with mares chosen to best match with his genetic makeup. His second foal crop produced a beautiful and biddable colt named Solis, out of a thoroughbred mare, obtained from Sam Lazarus, who became known only as the Mother of Solis.
An interesting bit of folklore has it that this mare was a very successful racing thoroughbred, but when the King Ranch obtained the Lazarus mares, they agreed never to advertise their pedigrees, as part of the deal.
The colt became an instant favorite at the ranch and following the plan of Bob Kleberg, was bred back to many of his half sisters. At the time, this was new territory for many horsemen, but it was carefully thought out by Kleberg, and one of the resulting foals was Wimpy, who, according to The AQHA, was born in 1937, several years before the AQHA was even formed.
Wimpy lived the first 23 years of his life on the King Ranch, and was bred mostly to King Ranch mares.
No show or race record for him exists, other than the show he won in Fort Worth, although he was ridden extensively, like the other stallions owned by the King Ranch. Records indicate he produced 174 foals that would be registered with AQHA.
As a breeder, Wimpy proved to stamp his foals quite strongly, probably because of his tight linebreeding. Some of his most famous sons include Bill Cody, Wimpy II, Red Wimpy, Showdown and Silver Wimpy, all great breeders in their own right.
George Clegg, the breeder of Old Sorrel, was given the old stallion in his later years, and when Clegg became unable to care for him, was sold to Rex Cauble of Houston Texas.
Wimpy died in 1959.
Here was a horse that started something, as the AQHA has become the largest horse registry in the world
